Henze composed these dances, which can be scored for various instruments, for the orchestra of the conservatory of Deutschlandsberg (Austria). These compositions are based on an anonymous 'Morissa' (Spanish designation for a dance form probably introduced by crusaders) from the English Fitzwilliam Virginal Book.
