Each one owns a voice and there are not two alike the world over. Nevertheless, voices have started to be categorized since the baroque period, according to families, tessitura and colours. To better know and recognize the various men's and women's voices, their specificities and tessitura, to understand their function as solo, in opera or concert, a capella, with orchestra or in chamber music, such are the purposes of this book. The presentation of each voice, from soprano to bass and from chamber music to great chorus, comes with musical extracts. These extracts, taken from a great diversity of stylistic works created between 1950 and 2009, allow us to take stock of the several approaches to the voice nowadays, among tradition and innovation.
