The piano music of French composer Claude-Achille Debussy (1862-1918) constitutes one of the most original bodies of Keyboard music ever written. Debussy's musical evolution is reflected in the way his music grows from its roots in the French romantic school to a thoroughly twentieth century style by the works of his maturity such as the Préludes and Etudes. Along the way, Debussy absorbed and transformed all of the musical influences he came under, from Wagnerian harmony, to jazz dance rhythms, Oriental painting and decorative arts and the unusual sound of the Javanese Gamelan Orchestra. This generous volume (80 pages) in the Basic Piano Literature Series, covers music from the formative stages of his development to his musical maturity, has been meticulously edited with reference to the best contemporary and urtext sources, and includes insightful notes on each piece by Phyllis Lehrer and Paul Sheftel. The volume includes the complete Children's Corner Suite, Cakewalk (Le Petite Negre), Arabesque No. 1, Clair de Lune, La plus que lente, Reverie, and four of the Préludes for Piano (La Cathédrale engloutie, La fille aux cheveux de lin, Minstrels and Bruyères). This is a collection that belongs in the library of every piano teacher and serious piano student.
