Orchestration: 2 Flutes (2nd db.Piccolo), Oboe, Cor Anglais, 2 Clarinets in Bb, Bass Clarinet, 2 Bassoons, 4 Horns in F, 2 Trumpets in C, 3 Trombones, Tuba, Timpani, Percussion (2 players: Triangle, Cymbals, Side Drum, Bass Drum), Harp, Celesta, Strings (Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello, Bass)
Following the publication of Thomas Hardy's play 'The Famous Tragedy of the Queen of Cornwall', Rutland Boughton wrote to Hardy to propose an opera based on the play. Hardy was delighted and the music-drama was first performed at the Glastonbury Festival in August 1924.
(A CD recording of the complete music-drama is available on Dutton Epoch 2CDLX 7256 released in 2010).
This Overture was written at a later date and was given a London Premiere at a Promenade Concert at the Queen's Hall on 31st August 1926 played by the New Queen's Hall Orchestra with the composer conducting.
A PACK comprises one full score, string parts 4/4/3/4/2 and all wind, brass and percussion parts.
