The parts are cued so that this arrangement can be played by strings only or strings and piano, with any available wind and percussion. If there are comparatively few lower strings, or no violas and 3rd violins, the piano will be useful in strengthening the tutti passages. It may also provide contrast when the orchestra consists mainly of strings. The 2nd oboe part is completely dispensable. The 3rd clarinet covers the lack of bassoon, when missing, and does not go above 'the break'.
