Die ' Messe de Requiem' ist wohl international das bekannteste und am häufigsten aufgeführte Werk von Gabriel Fauré. Nachdem der Komponist sich in der ersten Fassung noch auf nur fünf Sätze und eine kleine Besetzung mit tiefen Streichern, Harfe und Orgel beschränkt hatte, erfuhr das Werk eine stetige Erweiterung bis hin zur Fassung für großes Orchester von 1900, die dieser Ausgabe zugrunde liegt. Trotz der vergleichsweise langen Entstehungszeit bildet das Requiem eine stilistische Einheit. Anders als bei anderen Requiem-Vertonungen wird hier auf jegliche theatralische Momente verzichtet. Eine zurückgenommene Dynamik sowie anmutige Melodieführung sowohl der Solisten als auch des Chores geben dem Werk einen sanften und versöhnlichen Charakter. Der Klavierauszug basiert auf dem Urtext der Fauré-Gesamtausgabe (BA 9461), die seit 2010 im Bärenreiter-Verlag erscheint.
