Ein ganzes Meer for tenor and ensemble is a setting of the libretto from Austrian composer Ignaz Umlauf's 1778 singspiel "Die Schöne Schusterin". This work is part of a two-movement set of arias written by Beethoven to be inserted into the 1795 revival of "Die schöne Schusterin."
