This uplifting piece was written to honor one of the greatest jazz drummers of South Africa, Lulu Gontsana. Even eighths. The introduction is built on major seventh chords over a driving beat, which opens up at the start of the theme. It spaces out even further in the bridge before returning to the intro material, this time with a saxophone melody attached. Solo backgrounds are all derived from the thematic material, adding to the tightness of structure. Slight formal deviations occur in the solo sections, guaranteed to keep the soloist and listeners on their toes. Ensemble development follows, ending in a partial recap of the theme (reorchestrated). Finally, the introduction returns, this time stacking up 4 layers of counterpoint! A rousing finish to an energetic chart. Soloists - trombone 1, trumpet 4. No doubles. 5,4,4,G,P,B,D.
