If you have a deep, abiding love for '70s funk, Bitches Brew-era, Miles Davis, heavy metal, bossa nova, Igor Stravinsky, Charles Ives, and late '90s aggro-pop, this might just be the tune for you. This arrangement of a Ron Miles original begins with a funky 4/4 drum groove that burrows beneath a rubato conducted chorale with the solo trumpet (or alto) and woodwinds. The rest of the winds enter in 3/4 while the drums continue in 4/4, leading into an open solo section for trumpet that makes the rounds through several different grooves and a series of complex chord progressions. After a rousing recap of the initial groove, the chart ends in a slow 3/4 with the solo trumpet and woodwinds taking the melody out.
