Two orientations are at the basis of Sky over roots. One firsthand we have a solo flight for the alto recorder based on pentatonic modes, then a second movement with rhythmic roots scored for the tenor recorder. Through the melodies and poly-rhythms, we take notice of the jazz and African influences in the two works.The performer should strive for a rugged style of playing bringing out all the accents. The recorder holds many surprises with a refined and primitive side to this instrument that has been too often catalogued with a baroque or old 3 etiquette3 . It is high time that we acknowledge the recorder as a potential voice in the defence of today's music.Etienne Rolin
