The settings were written during 1988-89 while the composer served as the North Carolina Visiting Artist in Residence at Caldwell Community College in Lenoir, North Carolina. Images of Appalachian mountain music (dulcimers, shape note singing and tent revivals) dominate the mood of the piece while other influences include Brahms, Copland, John Adams and Baptist hymns. Hymns included: I. Abide With Me, II. Amazing Grace, III. Shall We Gather At the River.
