This beautiful reverie for euphonium and piano begins with a ephemeral interplay between the soloist and piano that, with the constantly changing meter, suggests no pulse, but creates a constant sense of rubato. This opening is followed by a more strident section in 4 with a very clear sense of time, though the rhythmic elements in the melody and accompaniment alternate between duple and triplet feel before it returns to the more relaxed beginning. This solo was written for Roger Behrend, euphonium player with the U.S.C.G. Band.
