Paul Lewis writes 'The two Sentimental Songs were originally written for bassoon and piano following lunches in the beautiful cathedral city of Chichester with the original dedicatee, bassoonist Alison Woodward, and hark back in style to the palm court music I heard my violinist mother playing in seaside hotels when I was young. The present palm court trio arrangement was made for violinist Shelley van Loen and her husband, cellist Trevor Burley, whose monthly concerts at the Grand Hotel, Eastbourne, joyfully keep alive the musical tradition in which my mother excelled.'
