The title of this piece is taken from the fourth verse of a poem called 'Vertical Spaces' by Colin Johnson. The piece is demanding for the performer, who has to both adhere to Finnissy's detailed instructions, and has a certain amount of freedom to interpret the occasional bars of graphic score. There are dramatic changes of tempo and overall the piece is to sound 'boisterous'.
