--------------------------------------------------------- The clarinettist Anton Stadler, for whom Mozart wrote his famous Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622 and the Quintet for Basset Clarinet and Strings, K. 581, doesn't have such a clean slate. He is said to have been thoughtless in managing money, as was Mozart. Nonetheless, the greatest works of Viennese classicism for the clarinet and for the basset clarinet tuned a third lower were written thanks to this man, who was employed in the orchestra of the Vienna Burgtheater and profoundly inspired Mozart. Before the backdrop of this pair of works in Mozart's oeuvre, it is an attractive thought to transform history's most famous clarinet concerto into a chamber music version. Wilfried Gottwald and Michael Salamon have adapted the renowned work for string quintet and clarinet; it includes the heart-rendingly beautiful Adagio in which the clarinet develops one of Mozart's most beautiful melodies above tender orchestral entries. Many things may sound unusual in it, although not a single passage nor a single tone of Mozart's original has been left out.
