When Wagner set about writing a new commission for the Ciompi String Quartet; her initial thoughts were of 'dignity and gravitas.' In the course of the composition; however; the music became 'whimsical and nostalgic;' reminding her of nothing more than her mother's childhood home in Tioga County (PA). For those unfamiliar with the Endless Mountains of northern Pennsylvania; her six movements will impart visions: Damsel Fly; Rock Run; Bug; Milkweed (memento mori); Mad Bramble; and Little Church in Nauvoo.
