Written in a folk-song style, the piece unfolds like an ancient story with the choir acting as a sacred troubadour. Thevoice of the Shepherd is heard calling for the sheep and leaving the 'ninety and nine' to find the little lost lamb. Sentimental but powerful, this would lend itself to extra-musical elements such as dance orpantomime.
