'Nocturnes' is the result of an American Choral Directors Association commision for their 2005 national convention. Each of the poems addresses aspects of the theme of 'Night' setting Rilke's Sa nuit d'ete, sung in french and supported by dense and colourful harmonies in both choir and piano, Pablo Neruda's Soneto de la noche from the 'Noche' section of his Cien sinetos de Amor, a text that is a favourite of Lauridsen and which he has set for a cappella choir and finally James Agee's well-known 'Sure on this shining night' once again for choir and piano. The 'Nocturnes' may be performed individually or as a cycle of about 14 minutes
