'The form of worship practiced by the Shakers in New England has been asubject of curiosity for more than a century and a half. The Shakers originated in the English Quaker Church and came to America in 1774 and settled in New England and in New York state. They still exist in some communities inthese territories.
The Shaker songs took on a lively spontaneity and a cross between Quaker orderliness and wild abandonment that characterised the rituals of the French prophets, from whom the Shakersdistantlystemmed.
The Shakers exercised in dancing, shaking and whirling until they went into trances and 'recieved songs as gifts. '
The songs are derived from 'spirit manifestations' and all haveindividual types of rhythms and texts. ' - Edward D. Andrews, from 'Shaker Songs', The Musical Quarterly, October 1937
