In the same year - 1909, the two Austrian composers Franz Schreker and Joseph Marx devoted themselves to their own settings of Ave Maria. Whereas Schreker's 'Ave Maria' was published in the year of its creation and, unlike his other works, is characterized by a rather bridled impressionist style, Marx took some time over the conception of his 'Marienlied'. He rearranged the original setting for high voice and piano into a version for medium voice and organ. It is this rearrangement that is his outstanding achievement where he created a balance between ardent expression and harmonic refinement.
