Auf Bitte seines Verlegers Simrock hin bearbeitete Brahms im Sommer 1888 acht der ursprünglich elf Zigeunerlieder- Quartette für eine Singstimme und Klavier. Auch in dieser Fassung konnte der Liedzyklus große Popularität gewinnen.
