This composition by George Gates takes three Mexican songs and arranges them for symphonic band. The first song/movement. 'Alma Llanera,' originally from Venezuela, had become a popular, traditional favorite of the marimba bands of the Tehuantepec region of southern Mexico. The second song, 'Azteca (Subo Subo),' is an Aztec lament from the pre-Hispanic period. The final song, 'Huapango (De Veracruz),' is a folk dance form native to the Veracruz region.
