As a composer, Edward MacDowell is mostly remembered for his two piano concertos, a great number of compositions for piano, several important instrumental suites and a large number of songs that were widely performed in his day.
In 1883 MacDowell composed '2 Fantasiestücke for Piano'. The movements of this opus 17 are 'Erzählung' (a Tale) and 'Hexentanz' (Witches Dance). Especially the second movement, 'Hexentanz', became very popular and is now arranged as a showpiece for Piano and Symphonic Band by American arranger Douglas McLain.
